Since it'* along the front and the side, how possible is a leaking thermostat gasket?

I agree it looks possible. Although on the SC models (which I am familiar with) the thermostat housing is lower and has a pitch that wouln't allow leaking coolant to easily get on top of the intake like the pics provided.

That pitch is the same on the L36 lower intakes, too.

His leak definitely looks like a gasket problem, at least.

Are we all sure or could it be that damn plastic fitting on the passanger side by the EGR valve. Just a thought.

EGR is on the driver side. Are you referring to the coolant elbow on the passenger side maybe?

The coolant elbow on the passenger side is lower than the pockets on the top of the LIM.

But, if he changes the UIM, gasket, and LIM gaskets, he should also change the coolant by-pass elbow.

I limped it over to a garage down the street from me and they did a pressure test. It looks to be a failed UIM. There is some oil in the antifreeze, but there is no antifreeze in the oil. How the hell can that happen???

The garage said they would do the upper and lower for $275 in labor so I'm buying the parts and having them do it. The local dealer wanted $1200. Something does not sound right! The guys at the garage seem to be pretty good so I guess I trust them on that price.

It would be a failed upper intake gasket. Doesn't seem that the manifold itself failed (yet). While it is off, it is a good time to change it out like you plan on doing.

*** UPDATE ***

The garage pulled the upper and lower intakes off the car. The top intake gasket was the issue.

I have a friend that works for a local GM dealer so I was able to get the GM revised UIM the UIM gasket TB gasket kit, and lower intake gaskets for $120.00 total. One good thing...the lower gasket is made of some sort of metal and looks to be much better. I'm also having them install a 180 degree thermostat.

Should I go with the GM red antifreeze or the good old green stuff? Is there anything else I should have them do while it’* all apart?[/b]
