Default HVAC Air filter?

Does the HVAC system on a '97 SE have an air filter or something? Whenever I run it on defrost, it blows crap on the top of the console, and my allergies suck this time of year. The '00 that we own has a filter in it, I was wondering whats goin on with our other car.

Do you have a lot of junk on top of your air intakes?

I believe they are right below where your windshield meets the firewall.
