Default Help needed - traction problems!

This is going to sound weird, but bear with me while I explain it.

It'* a really crappy day here in central NY, and I was driving to work in - shall we say - "a hurry". I was taking a left-hand turn onto a busy road, which requires me to pretty much stomp on it to get into traffic OK. Well, I stomped on it - wet road and all - expecting the tires to spin from now until Kingdom Come. My tires spun for about 1/2 a second and then grabbed and stopped spinning! Then they started spinning again for another 1/2 second and stopped again. After that I just laid off of the throttle, and wondered WTF?
The weird thing of it is, I don't have traction control! (or, at least I don't think I do - there'* no light coming on or buttons to push. I have the SE model.)
What do you think, do I have a larger problem here?

Thanks guys (and girls) for any insight you have....thank God everything is under warranty.
