Guys.. can a scan tell him the exact temperature the computer sees? I'm not very familiar with that year. My car seemed to be running hot, had it scanned to find out the gauge was off.

In looking at different years of GM cars I've noticed something. The newer GM'* have a smaller swing gauge, therefore the temps are much closer together.

Which to me means I am not going to notice a 5-10 degree change easily on the newer car. However having wondered about my temps on my own car I had a scanner available (after stopping in and chatting with buddy for a while) and my gauge read 190, actual temp 180, when gauge read 240 (yes redline) actual temp 215. Now that'* a huge non linear swing and it concerned me..but I now know what the car is doing versus the gauge.

While a coolant flush will never hurt, if his problem isn't bad coolant then we may be steering him toward unnecessary items.

When was the last coolant flush?
Has the car always run at these temperatures?
Do you plan on modifying the car for more speed or power?

Brandon, the fans are commanded on at a low speed when the computer reads 215 degrees and one of the fans speeds up to high speed at 226-8 degrees. A quick way to check the fans only, not the temperature is to turn on your A/C at max. The fans should both come on as if high speed was commanded. If only one is on then yes..you need to diagnose why the other isn't coming on.

If the car has always run these temps I would assume a gauge issue. If the coolant is nice and green or has been changed, it may not need a flush and change. If you don't plan on modding, a stock temperature 195 or a 180 undrilled would be the way to go, mods make more heat and would then aim you toward drilling a 180.

You need to verify what temp the PCM sees... The gage may be off... Its possible that you me be due for a thermostat... I reccomend a 180F, possibly with a couple of added hold to help aid the cooling ability.... Billy boost... Told me you were in the north.. Once you find out what the temps are really running, you may consider a new 195 if the PCM is showing 200F... Nice to have that heating ability in the dead of winter..

On my 95 it looks like its at 150-160 when the PCM sees 180... when my fans turn on it looks like 205-210 when its actually at 220....
I said "You'd know where he was better than I.....and I am going to swap back to a 195 soon so I have the heat available for to keep the windshield clean in the bad weather.." lol
