Did the van ever have the dreaded Series 2 upper intake failure? Perhaps it did and you didn't know? If moisture got into the oil pan, it could have rusted some bearings or the crank and cause this. Wouldn't be the first time.

Pull the EGR tube out of the upper plastic intake. I'll lay even odds that you find evidence of engine coolant in the passage or tube.

Your car isn't a Series II, and they don't rock too much (IMO). Not with their failure rate.

According to carpoint, a 99 Montana has the 3.4L V6, but I've seen Carpoint be wrong on several things.

My 1992 SSE has been to South dakata and back and utah and back running at more than 75 and with 129k it still is running like a top. Series II 3.8'* Rock
