Default grinding noise from ac

My ac compressor on my 96 bonny is making a grinding noise only when it'* off, but as soon as you turn the ac on it stops making noise! What do you guys think ? Thanks Bob.

The only thing that engages when on is the clutch solenoid. So the sound must be in the clutch field not retracting properly when off. The clutch could be dragging in the field housing. Try lubing the mechanism without getting it into the clutch itself.
There is also the possibility the bearing is going.
