Default GAS MILAGE?!

are aftermarket intakes really supposed to increase your gas milage? I heard you could possibly get 2-3 mpg more, but I'm getting the same, if not less. I get around 20-22 mpg.

I have a 94 SE with a K&N filter

I got 40 mpg one time on a four hour trip with no AC running on a cool fall day and no stops.
