Default Engine light on, any ideas why?

Yesterday I broke my Maf sensor. I know becaue when I started my car with it again my check engine light was on and the car was idling like total crap, I even drove it around and it died on me.

Today I got a new one, car is some what idling funny, the check engine light is still on but once Im actually moving it feels normal

What should I do? Someone mentioned some places check codes for free.

The SES light will go off in the next day or two if the problem is fixed. However, as was already said, autozone should be able to clear it for you with no problems.

Autozone typically won't clear codes, only read them. There are liability concerns over clearing codes. Disconnect your battery for 30 minutes (negative cable). Reconnect, and drive a couple days. If you still have a light and run like dog ****, get it scanned.

I'm having the exact same problem with mine except the maf sensor has been replaced and engine codes cleared - engine light stayed off for one day then back on. Car dies every few miles but starts back up fine. I'm really stumped. Sometimes there is a distinctive smell like catalytic converter type smell.

I guess I need to have it scanned as mentioned. How much will that cost on average?

Hammer..

Please put your car year and type (SE, SLE, SSE or SSEI) in your signature, so members can see what you have easily and help answer questions.

If your car is 96+ Autozone or Advance auto will scan only for free.
95 most Advance autos can..but you need to remind them it'* OBD1 protocal running on an OBD2 connector.

That might differ depending on the year of your car. Can you please put your year and trim level in your signature?

I had a similar problem after putting a Rice pipe on my 99 . Check engine light came on and idle was rough. I consulted with the Great folks here on this form and I think it was Wilwren that told me to give it a day or two. Problem cleared it'* self after th PCM learned the new air flow. Default Its fixed.

I finally got my Bonnie fixed. I replaced the MAF sensor again and that did it. I got a bad part from NAPA. The mechanic I spoke to said his shop did not buy NAPA electrical parts because they were having failures on 75% of them. That said, I was able to get another one from NAPA at no charge and that fixed the problem.

I am so happy. Its been 3 months.
