engine light

1992 bonneville sse
163,000 miles
new tstat thermot

I can not go to auto zone and get a scan so I shorted the diagnostic connect to see what codes came up. My engine light blinked 8 times but the diagnostic codes start @ 13.
Does this mean my code is 18.
My engine light does not stay on.
maybe 3 min at the most.

the light shoud flash once and then twice =12 and the cooling fans should have come on....the light will display the codes

The correct procedure is in Techinfo.

12 three times, then your code(*), then 12 three times.

yeah it flashed 8 times after the second flash and then the pause

You're not doing it right or not counting right.

It should:

Flash.......flashflash
Flash.......flashflash
Flash.......flashflash

Then it'll flash first and second digit of any codes and repeat 2 more times.

Then:
Flash.......flashflash
Flash.......flashflash
Flash.......flashflash
