Danthurs may be my hero - coolant leaking problem
Hi all,
Having a coolant leaking problem. I've replaced the water pump and danthurs suggest the coolant elbows. Well i looked at the area where the coolant is leaking out from, and it seems to be form the upper coolant elbow, more specifically, the end going into the ... engine, whatever part it is.
Does anyone know if these elbows are available at any regular auto parts store or are they a dealership item?
Also, is it hard to change them?

The coolant elbows are Dorman part number 47065. This package comes with two, one for the leak you describe (which sounds like the lower intake manifold) and one for the elbow that heads into the timing cover.
Being a 97, the next part will be of interest. From 96 to sometime in 98-99, the bracket that holds the alternator (alternator tensioner assembly) had a metal elbow as part of it'* casting that was o-ringed and went into the timing cover. The importance of this is to wiggle the tensioner assembly out instead of prying on it. Prying could cause the elbow to break off the tensioner assembly. Before reinstalling take the larger of the two o-rings off the second elbow and install it on the metal elbow.
Assembly on the left is the 96-99 version with a metal elbow. The one on the right is the newer version with the plastic lower elbow.
You can also see the could of bolt holes where this is held to the engine.

Thanks to both of you, Danthurs and BillBoost.....everything is now fixed, and driving like a dream again with no leaking of coolant. That stuff is too expensive to buy all the time haha.
Heres how it went:
water pump: 80
coolant elbows: 4.49
real problem: coolant elbows.
meaning i spent 80 bucks to give my car a brand new water pump for no reason! oh well, the cars got 412 000 kms, it'll need it eventually!
