Richard: doctors 'optimistic' of good recovery
Doctors at Leeds General Infirmary said they are 'reasonably optimistic' that Richard Hammond will make a good recovery after his crash in a jet-powered car.

News continues to emerge from the hospital where Richard'* wife Mindy and their daughters Willow and Isabella are at his bedside.

We have received well over 4,000 emails today from Top Gear readers wishing Richard well - and the inbox is growing as each second ticks by.

The accident happened during filming for the new series of Top Gear at the former RAF airfield in Elvington, near York.

Richard was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary'* neurological unit. A hospital spokesman said this morning: "He has seen some improvement overnight, but remains in a serious but stable condition."

We spoke to Jeremy earlier today - he visited Richard and Mindy in Leeds and you can read his statement here. Like us, his thoughts are with Mindy and the family.

Obviously we expect the crash will be fully investigated by the Health and Safety Executive and the BBC.

The BBC said in a statement: "We are pleased to hear that Richard has improved slightly overnight, but we continue to be concerned about his condition and we are keeping in touch with his family.

"The circumstances of this accident will be fully investigated by the BBC, and this process began last night.

"We will, of course, be fully co-operating with any investigation by the police and the Health and Safety Executive. Until the BBC'* investigation is complete, it would be inappropriate to comment on the details of what happened."

Jeremy arrives at Leeds
Jeremy and James have arrived at Leeds General Infirmary to visit Richard and his family.

Jeremy told TopGear.com: "Richard remains in intensive care. Obviously at this time both he and his family are the most important concerns we have. It must be devastating for his wife Mindy and his two utterly adorable children.

"I would just like to say how heartened Richard will be when I tell him just how many motorists and truck drivers on my way here wound down their windows to say they were rooting for him. Both James and I are looking forward to getting our Hamster back."

In addition, we've already received a number of emails at TopGear.com wishing Richard well. If you'd like to add your thoughts, please email us.

We've posted some of your messages on the website and do our best to make sure Richard receives them all.

Richard: your messages
We've been overwhelmed with the amazing response to Richard Hammond'* accident. Our inbox is bursting with thousands of emails from all over the world, all wishing the Hamster a quick recovery. It'* fantastic to know how many of you have him in your thoughts - if we could post every message up here, we would!

Here'* what just a few of you are saying:

I met Richard at an episode of Top Gear last summer and he spent the majority of his lunch break outside, with the audience. I was amazed how friendly and down to earth he was, perfectly happy to chat to people and pose for photos.
Nicole Hitchcock

I'm totally gutted and hope that when he returns his 'try anything once' attitude is still fully intact. I feel like a best mate has been injured. Not a lot of work has been done in this office today.
Chris Tabern, Knutsford

He maybe is a small hamster but he has the heart and courage of a lion. He'* a top guy and I wish him all the best in his full recovery.
Jason, Yorkshire

My prayers go out to Richard and his family. He is a great presenter with a bright future in front of him. I hope to see his lovely smiling face back on Top Gear soon.
Joanne Smith, Herts

Our thoughts and heartfelt wishes are with Richard and his family. We know that Richard is in good hands at LGI and he is getting the best care possible. We are sure that the Hamster we all love and miss will be back on our screens as soon as he can.
Candice Mellor, Dewsbury

When I came into the living room and saw the story come on to the news, I was completely and utterly stunned, physically rooted to the spot. Richard is a superb presenter and the nation has the family in its thoughts.
Matt Hodson

Hamster, sorry to hear news of your crash; hope you pull through, mate. You're a champion for all us short arses.
Nick Jones, Wales

We are all praying that Richard will be all right. Please pass on our thoughts to his wife and daughters.
Helen Grieve and family, Wakefield

So shocked to hear the news. Our love and prayers go out to his family and colleagues.
Penny and Clive Kennedy, Northumberland

A fan in Canada is thinking of Richard and hoping we'll see him soon.
Pete

Hang in there mate! We love you!
Eddie and Marlene Smith, New Zealand

Please would you pass on our best wishes to Hamster and we hope he pulls through sharpish. We can't watch Top Gear without him!
The Reid family, Huddersfield

A small man with a huge fan club. Hang in there Hamster.
JP, the Netherlands

Richard, get better soon. The world is a better place with you and you brighten the lives of so many.
Paul Hiseman, Dartford

Get well soon, Hammy.
Rob, Belfast

Devastated to hear the news of Hamster'* accident. Please pass on our hopes and thoughts to his family and all the Top Gear team.
Tony Topping

Just to let you know there are thousands out here wishing and hoping that Richard is OK, pulls through, and makes a complete recovery. If the power of collective will has anything to do with it, he'll be OK.
Tom Walker

Shocked to hear about the accident. Best wishes from me and mates in New Zealand - please please please get well and don't leave us to Jeremy and James!
Craig

Top Gear is the only programme I religiously watch and to hear the news about Richard Hammond almost brought me to tears. I'm not a religious man but I will pray that he makes full recovery.
Phil Vaughan

I met Richard at a recording of Top Gear last year, and he is genuinely a very charming and funny guy. His positive attitude about life and living it is completely infectious. I wish you all the very best for a quick and speedy recovery. Make it quick, so we can get you back on TV where you belong with James and Jeremy!
Rachel

Richard, you are a true character of television and have provided many hours of enjoyment for many people young and old throughout the world.
Daniel Gronert, Australia

I would just like to let the Hammond family know that my thoughts are with them and I hope Richard is back to his normal funny self as soon as possible.

Occupational hazard....

I sure hope Hammy pulls through, it would be a damn shame for him to go, but, if things go bad, he'll do doing what he likes.

at 300 mph
