Default Curiosity - windshield wipers

Here in stupid Jersey it'* been raining for the past three weeks and doesn't show any signs of letting up for the next week. I've been using my wipers a lot, but I've been wondering, just why is it on almost every American car (seems to be this way on Fords too) the wipers need to raise to that intermediate position a couple of degrees above the parked position? This is particularly annoying when it'* snowing lightly and snow builds up beneath the wipers and when you go to turn them off, there'* a whole bunch underneath and the wipers can't park correctly. This is just something that'* been nagging me for a while. Anybody have an explanation?

Thanks,
Stoopid

It'* that "nice" feature that allows your ugly wipers to be hidden when they are not in use.

Yes, but why can't the wipers just do a full sweep from their "hidden" position?

That lip between the window and where they park would probably wear the wiper out. And the snow problem that you mentioned earlier would probably get in the way.

Since the large snowfall we had in march I can't get the passenger wiper to park correctly. It sits just up on the windshield itself. Had this problem with my 88le also. Damn snow damn winter.

Hey savant, where ya been? Here'* a trick for you. Cut and remove a little bit of the weatherstripping seal for the hood. This will allow some engine bay heat to escape in the direction of your wipers, and help melt the snow. Just make sure you cut a piece that'* not right in front of your climate control intake. You can always put it back in the spring!

Wow, Will, I'm surprised that you remember me. Impressive memory. Very good tip! I think I'll try it out next winter.

School was a b*tch, and finals kicked my butt, but now that it'* summertime, I think I'll have a little bit more time to come back to this site again. Glad to be back!
