Changing Transmission Fluid
Hi,
I just had my car go in for a oil change today. I have a 1996 Bonnevile SE, with 103,000 miles on it. I am considering geting the tranny fluid changed in it. along with a new filter. My mechanic looked at the fluid and said it was a little lighter shade of red, and had a very slight burned smell. He says there pros and cons to changing it now. He said the bands right now are probably starting to slip. If he puts new fluid in it, it might wear out the parts fast. He also said, that if i dont change it, the bands could start slipping even more, and cause more damage. He said he'* changed tranny fluids on cars, and a few weeks later, the car wouldnt drive. So, I am wondering, based on your experience, would you reccomend changing it? i have no idea whether it has ever been changed before. is 103k a good time to change it?? Have any of you guys ever ruined your tranny just by changing the fluid in it? Thanks for you feedback guys....

When I got my car 2 months ago it had a brownish colored fluid and smelled a little burned, I changed is twice in 500 miles and haven't had any problems. How is it shifting? I would get that fluid changed and soon before theres any more damage (if theres any to begin with) If you dont want to get a flush done I would advice changing it once, then drive it for maybe 3000 miles then change it again. I recomend using Valvoline Maxlife fluid, damn good fluid for tannies with some miles on it. I would go for a flush, but if money is a problem then change is twice in a 3000 mile time. I found this to work well. But no matter what you do, get that fluid changed. If if smells a little burned get it out now. Also just some more advice, if you dont have trans cooler, I would get one, jegs.com sells them for 45 bucks. These are a couple things that could help you avoid a $1500 or more bill for a new trans.

i would recommend a flush if i was you. with a flush, you dont need to change the screen,aka filter. it is nothing more than a nylon mesh screen ment to stop large particals from getting into the pump.
if its not slipping now, flush it, the only time i have seen problems after a service is if the tran already had problems before.

ok. I had been having problems with my tranny, and then I changed the fluid and filter. 2 days later my tranny gave out for good. I had to get a new tranny. I don't really know what to tell you. About the filter. I think I payed $30+ for it it at auto tech. I was like WTF

Changed my fluid due to a shudder when car was in over drive. Fixed the problem to a tee, tranny never worked better....but 2 weeks later ,the thing blew up!!! Christmas Day to be exact

the tranny blew up? or did the engine go?
