Default Can Idle speed be adjusted on the 97 SSE?

Idle speed is down around 600, and that doesn't pull the tranny at stop lights. So when its time to go it is a little disconcerting to touch the throttle and still have that tiny wait before the tranny picks it up.

I also have a 94 and it seems to idle more like 7-800 and feels better at lights.

Been looking thru shop manual, but can't find anything about ide speed at all.

(Layout of the 97 shop manual sucks when compared to 94)

that'* pretty much normal for a hot engine and in gear while idling.. my */c 97 idles at that, and sometimes around 550..... as long as it'* not running rough it'* fine.

There is no adjustment for Idle. It'* controlled entirely by the PCM. An erratic idle can be caused by alot of things. A full tuneup, including removing and cleaning the TB may be in order.

You would have to change parts inside the PCM.

The 93 is set at 650, 700 with the A/C on.

On a side note, I remember seeing an adjustment screw of some kind near the top rear of the throttle body on my '92 SSE */c, but I've never seen any mention of it in the factory shop mamuals...must be kinda like the adjustment screw on the front of my supercharger - I asked about how to adjust that screw a long time ago, and nobody responded...my guess is that both of these adjustment screws control the air opening (bypass) when the butterfly valve is in the closed position. But since the ECM controls the idle speed, I have no idea what effect the adjustment can have.

Well, I was looking for something more like a throttle-stop screw the way old carbs used to have.

Anyway, since it doesn't seem to have one, I made my own stop. I put a shim over the end of the cruise-control cable ... just enough to hold the throttle open a very teensy bit, when the accelerator is at idle.. Now I got my 800 rpm, the tranny creeps the way I like it, and life is almost good (compared to the 94, I am very disappointed with the 97, overall).

You-all can tell me the downside of doing that...

94 SSE 175k km
97 SSE 115k km
both loaded

Idle can be adjusted actually, but only a minimal amount! You can adjust it by re-positioning your TPS. This will allow you to "fine tune" the idle only though. Other than this, there is no real adjustment to the Idle short of a "chip" for the PCM.
