obviously if the security light is on. in my case the ignition wasn't reading the vats or the sensor or whatever in the key. had to replace the whole ignition on the column due to some wires frayed

I had that same problem. It only occurs in the winter, but it'* easy to do. If you can't start it, just wiggle the shifter back and forth a bit. For some reason, unless it is in ABSOLUTE PARK, then it won't start. I don't know if this will apply to you, but give it a shot.

An electrical problem needs a good diagnostic.

It'* possible the resistor in your key is going bad or is dirty. Try a different ignition key.

Also try cleaning your battery cables, harnesses, and terminals.

When you put the key in the ignition, it completes a circuit that tells the car you have a valid key. The car expects a key with a specific value of resistor pellet embedded in it. When the Security light is on and the starter won't crank the engine, it'* telling you that it'* not detecting the right resistance from the little chip in your ignition key, and thinks you're trying to steal the car with a copied key (i.e. one that does not have the right value of resistor pellet in it). (I assume the light stays on for about three minutes before you can try again, right?)

Try cleaning the little contacts on the key, or better yet, try another key (hopefully you have at least two). Ace Hardware stores have a "VATS Interrogator" box that enables them to check which key blank will be the correct one to use (there are about 15 different resistance values used), if you want to have another key made but don't feel like paying dealer price$.

I have had this problem as well, only in winter, and yes the battery had to be replaced because it was weak...haven't had the problem since.
