Default battery drain

Hi
I have a 95 bonneville with a battery drain problem
The battery will drain when the car sits... some times in 5 hrs... some time it will sit for 24 hrs ...then it will drain down to 7 or 8 volts. I have a new battery, it is sittting in the drive with a volt meter on it. I check for a voltage pull and nothing. I have been watching and charging and watching ...and it just goes dead.... any help ?
thanks

Try this first:

Here are a few things to try. One, remove the negative cable from the terminal and put a test light between the cable and the battery post. If the light glows, there is a drain. To find what circuit is causing the drain, remove one fuse at a time until the light goes away. Then, install them one at a time. When the light glows there is a drain, when the light is off, the bad circuit was removed. You may not get the light to turn off. In that case, it means that there is a drain in some other circuit that does not run through the fuse panel. First place I would look at is the starter. Starters have been known to short out at the solenoid and cause a constant drain to ground.

Good Luck!

A current meter will do a better job of finding the drain. This is a thread by EchoSSEi who recently tracked down his problem, that should point you in the right direction.

A neighbor has a few years old Gran Prix that would run down parking in home garage and then within several hours battery would be dead. Sometimes not. Never knew if it would start in morning. The shade-tree ( a very good and knowledgeable tree ) mechanic next door helped and decided to replace the starter. No more problem Something about solenoid in starter...

I assume you've thought about the hood light, trunk light, glove box light. IA quick check is open quickly and touch the bulb and base to see if they're warm from having been on a long time.

Any aftermarket equipment recently installed? If so, this may give you an idea of where to start. Any other electrical or headlight/interior lighting issues on the car?

How about we get the model of this car?

An optioned car would have ELC and that'll surely run down a battery if it has a slow leak on the direct to battery 95 year.
