From the 1998 Owner'* Manual again...
Your vehicle can tow a trailer if it is equipped with the
proper trailer towing equipment. To identify what the
vehicle trailering capacity is for your vehicle you
should read the information in “Weight of the Trailer”
that appears later in this section. But trailering is
different than just driving your vehicle by itself.
Trailering means changes in handling, durability and
fuel economy. Successful, safe trailering takes correct
equipment, and it has to be used properly.

Weight of the Trailer
How heavy can a trailer safely be?
It should never weigh more tha1n, 000 lbs. (450 kg). But
even that can be too heavy.
It depends on how you plan to use your rig. For
example, speed, altitude, road grades, outside
temperature and how much your vehicle is used to pull a
trailer are all important. And, it can also depend on any
special equipment that you have on your vehicle.
You can ask your dealer for our trailering information or
advice, or you can write us at:

The suggested max towing weight is 1000 Lbs....
I am going to say all of this depends on the tounge weight, the trans, and how you set up the rear of the car.... These are really not cars to use for towing a boat... Thats not to say that I wouldn't do it...
Myself personally, I would be willing to tow 2000+Lbs but I would understand that the car is not intended for that, nor is the transmission, or the rear shocks or springs... Then you have to take into account the overall tounge weight that will apply force to the rear of the car... Not to exceed 100Lbs for every 1000 you tow...
I have air struts adapted to the rear of my car, as well as a 29,000 GVWR Heavy Duty trans cooler.... But I still do not tow... lol
What is the weight of the 16ft boat and trailer combined?
Also keep in mind that the 4T60-E was meant for a max of 6000 Lbs... Now take into account that you have a 3500-3600 Lb car full of fuel, and most likely 4 or 5 people... So the car is now moving 4200-4300 Lbs add in a full tank of fuel, 4500 lbs maybe...
Just some general thoughts for you...
I once saw someone tow large boat( bigger than the car ) with a 3800 regal once...
