Heard some weird noises coming from my engine so I looked under the hood and it appears something is getting scraped away as I see metal shavings shooting out of the pulley system. Im pretty sure its from the alternator but when the car is off and I turn the alternator by hand, it doesnt seem to be rubbing on anything and nothing else does either. Can anyone help?

Was it like a clunking or clattering sound? Thats what I have and i've been told my alt is ready to go. If its spitting metal on you're belts then its probably finished.

That'* definantly a new one to me....I'd run it until I found it.....Sounds like something is fragging a bearing....just my thought'* though.

Check your harmonic balancer pulley for cracking of the rubber behind it. And wash the engine thoroughly to see where the debris is coming from.

remove the serpentine belt and check all pulleys for looseness or wobble.A loose pulley can cut into the aluminum housing it'* mounted to if there'* not much clearance.

I plan to replace the belt with a Gatorback so I'll go ahead and check things out before I put it on. Thanks for the help guys, hopefully nothing will break.

Turns out it was the belt about to fall off! Everything else looked good up top but when I looked at a larger bottom pulley it was near the edge. Once I straightened it out it sounded fine and no more grinding. I went ahead and got me a nice new Gatorback since this belt had some cracks in it and I shoud be putting it on tomorrow. Good times!
