Default Airbag light

I've had my '93 for a few weeks now. The airbag light was on when I got it, but it comes and goes. Mostly on. I know that a previous owner had the airbag, steering wheel, and airbag coil off of the car to "fix" the VATS system, so it might be possible that my airbag coil'* "clock spring" wire got stretched or stressed by being reinstalled incorrectly (the guy had the steering wheel 20 degrees off, so any incompetence is possible here). However, I have removed the airbag, wheel, and coil, and reinstalled correctly, so at least we know that everything is plugged in. I also think I read that the troublesome airbag module thing is not under the carpet (where it tends to get wet in later years), but under the dash somewhere. So it seems less likely that corrosion on that connector is the problem. The fuse is good.

I know that the best way to figure an airbag light out is to get it scanned for codes. I may have access to a scanner, but what scanner do I need? Tech I, Tech II, Actron? Is it scanned through the regular OBD-I port, or do I have to find the airbag module thing?

Also, is there any other test that I can do on the sensors, for resistance or something? I have a digital multimeter and time, if anything can be learned from it.

This is one of those times I wish I had a FSM. Maybe someone else would be so kind as to look it up in theirs?

Thanks in advance.

I'd check under the passenger seat carpet. The module should be there and possibly has corrosion. Does the intermittency have any relation to wheel position?

I was sure I'd read in a previous post that the earlier '92-99'* did not have the box under the carpet, but that it was in the dash somewhere. If it is, in fact, under the carpet, that would make it far more suspect. Can anyone confirm where that is on a '93? I won't have time today to pull my carpet. Gotta go work.

I haven't noticed any relation between steering wheel position and the Airbag light coming on, but that doesn't necessarily mean there isn't one. So far, I don't think it'* come on while I was driving, only when I start it up, then suddenly it'll stay on after blinking for it'* usual 7 times.

Would a faulty "clock spring" cause the light to come on as I turned a corner, or would it not detect a fault there until the next time it ran through it'* diagnostics? I guess I just don't know enough about how the system checks itself.
