I bought my 96 Bonneville SE last week and the light that shows what gear you are in doesn't light up. I know its not the end of the world, and it is pretty easy to figure out what gear I am in, but I am a little anal about stuff working on my vehicles. How do you crack that open and replace that bulb? Thanks!!
undo the two screws under the ashtray, remove the shift **** (put it in 'D' or a lower gear, there is a c clip on the front of the **** to unlock it, i just used a really small flat head to pull it out), then lift the console up. It is hinged at the rear so just flip it up out of the way...you'll see the bulb....disclaimer: i replaced the console bulb in my ssei and i think you'll find that the bulb only lights up the letters and doesn't indicate which gear it'* in, but i could be wrong.

Yeah, you are right, just lights up the whole strip, and not that red dot showing what gear its in- thats the one I need to figure out, the other bulbs fine.
