95 Bonneville SE - Sqealing noise diagnosis???
Hey guys, I've got a 95 SE and am looking for some help determining where a squealing noise is coming from.
Here are the syptoms:
The noise only presents itself after I've been highway driving for a while (if I get in my car and city drive, the noise never occurs, regardless of how long I seem to drive it). Also, when it'* acting up, It only seems to be audible from idle to around 1500RPM as well. Whenever I accelarate from a stop sign/light, the noise goes away, however if I take the car out of gear and bring it up over 1500RPM, the noise persists (and its rather obnoxious). One other thing I've figured out is that if I take the car out of gear and bring the engine over 1500RPM, the noise persists.
Finally, if I let the car sit and cool off for 5 or 10 minutes and then start it back up, the noise doesn't come back (unless I highway drive it again).
My first guess was that I had a bad idler pulley. I changed the belt and pulley yesterday afternoon and then went out to test it. Same problem. The only other things that I can think of would be either a water pump or power steering pump going out on it. Any thoughts, as I'm rather stumped. BTW, for reference, the car has 75K miles on it.
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure the o-ring is in place around your pcv valve. If it gets thrown away when the pcv valve is changed, you'll sometims get a squealing sound after the engine warms up.
ok.. if you have someone else rev the engine above 1500RPM ( or when you hear it in idle ). get a piece of hose and listen to each pulley and see if you can pin point if it'* the pulley bearings or not or where it'* coming from?.. another way to check pulley bearings is ( you have to be sober to do this. ) start the car.. and touch one end of a slot screwdriver to the pulley screw ( some pulley you can't do it to.. like the water pump, */C, Alternator ).. and feel for vibrations.. compare that to the one with the lease vib.. usually when a bearing is going you can tell by the vibration.. then by the time you hear the sound.. it'* shot already..
