Hey guys...need some assistance. I just developed a coolant leak on my 95 SE (Series II, Vin K, 129,000mi), which turned out to be a crack in the black plastic coolant elbow piece that goes from the belt tensioner to the LIM. I brought it over to the local dealer and am being told that to remove the tensioner & replace the coolant elbow, it is going to take 3.4 hours & run a bit over $300.

I must say, I was taken aback when they told me that. I have a friend who works in a dealership in another state who claims this is only about a 1/2 hour fix.

Can anyone who has done this verify either claim? Before I shell out a bunch of money, I want to make sure the dealership isn't trying to take advantage.

Also, is this a complicated fix? I'm certainly not a mechanic, but if this isn't too crazy, maybe I should just consider doing it myself.

Absolutely do it yourself. But read this first:

Because you probably need to do the LIM gaskets as well, and should take the time to install a new UIM as a preventive measure, with a reduced-diameter stovepipe.

I haven't done one on a '95 3800, but have on a '99 - there are some minor differences. However, removing the tensioner assembly and replacing the elbow that way is about was about a 30 minute job. Had to remove the alternator, but after that it was 3 bolts and it'* off.

It is very possible to remove the tensioner. I replaced one 5 hours from home in another members garage that way. With the proper parts and hand tools... call the project a start to finish in 2 hours easily.

However..as Willwren mentioned you will want to look into the dreaded upper intake manifold and head off a future repair at the same time.
