Should be a easy fix, and you may kick yourself after. Clean both ends of both battery cables. Make sure they are tight and put dielectric grease to keep them clean.

Default my 97 ssei shuts off

after driving for about 45min on 495 North my 97 ssei jus shut off on me it started right back up and after another 15 miles shut off again. i was driving to jersey and it shut off about 9 times during my 3 hour drive. i took it to a mechanic and he couldnt figure out wat the problrm was there was no check engine light only the volt light but he stated that that always happens when a car shuts off.... some guy that was sitting outside of an autozone said it was the mas air flow sensor so i purchased another one for 187.00 and the car shut off again im tired of runing around to aal these different ppl and payinng them to tell me that they dont kno wats wrong with my baby.... i took some time to play doctor and jus let the car run and see if i noticed anything out of the ordinary and i think its the vacuum holes but a couple of them were cracked and was making a hissssing sound. help plz nm

I merged your threads as they appear to be related to the same problem and had close to the same title. That way folks didn't skip one thinking it was a duplicate when both contained good information.

When you say it dies then restarts, does it restart on it'* own or do you restart it?

Sounds like a crank sensor possibility to me. The tough part is while being consistent, there'* no codes and it'* not doing the problem for the mechanic which makes it very tough for him to diagnose.

In the future if you are trying to diagnose a maf sensor, unplug it. This defaults the computer to tables and the car won't run 100% as it would with a good sensor, but it'll run pretty good.

When it shuts off do you have power to any other systems ?
Does the radio work, power windows, wipers etc...?

My son is experiencing the same problem with his 1997 Bonneville. We had it in to a local mechanic today. The car engine, power steering, and power brakes just stop while driving (dangerous!). The odd thing is the electricals still work----windows, radio, etc... are fine.

The security light is lit and won't go off. The local mechanic thinks it may be a problem with the security and says only a GM dealer can fix it. Cha ching, no thanks! We are not "car people" so we can't fix it ourselves. But this care has 187,000 miles on it and just needs to last a few more months before he can afford a new car.

Mechanic also said no codes showed up when they ran it.

Any suggestions????

If the car stalls, it should not be due to the theft deterrent system. The lights you see and loss of engine powered accessories is quite normal.

Personally..I'd suggest a round of crank sensors to you all. Experience with one is the key. You might wait another 2 years before it gives you any type of code.

If the car stalls and restarts on it'* own... look at the shifter indicator lights, if any are blinking..that means the car sensed a start up while in gear. It'* not a definitive thing, but it'* another clue.

If the problem is with the VATs there is a work around. Take a look at this write up. Can't say for sure this will fix the problem, but it'* far cheaper then going to a dealer.

when it dies i have to restart it the radio light still stays on an i think the head lights do also but it seems to only do it when the car gets hot and i noticed when it stalls and i start it bac up the rpm'* dont go pass too and i could b briving like 90mph
