When it rattles, listen.
Took wife to lunch today in Bonneville, as we left the restaurant we heard a faint tapping (I thought it was the blower fan). Got worse quickly and when we stopped for gas & opend the door it was loud but seemed to be only at idle.
Went home immediately and found large pieces of rubber missing from the balancer (found two that were over two inches by a half inch wide). Fortunately had a spare in the garage for a temorary fix until I get a new one.
Imagine it had been going for a while but the real failure came on quick. Since this may be more age and conditions related than milage (think this one just had about 85,000 miles on it), it may be a good thing to check for cracks.

On the road again or would post a picture.HB appears to have three spokes in it but while two big chunks are missing, the innards are not completely visible, may cut apart and see but can say that it really makes a racket when bad.
Is easily visible if you remove the passenger tire and the splash shield otherwise you will probably need to use a mirror. I could feel where the rubber was missing - front of balancer should be solid rubber and smooth.
Bought a replacement at AZ but took it back before installing - when possible I do not buy things made in China (personal issue) and the Dorman is stamped "CHINA" on the front.
Anyone know where the Pioneer Prods. DA2312 is made ? The GM part is about $50 more but may just pay it. OTOH part number is now an 889xxxx which says to me it is made by someone else.
Ours is a 90 and the balancer has the dual timing rings on the inside (like all "C" engines).
