Default max rpm

Not to say I do this all the time, but I am just curious...

What is the "max" I should let it rev to before I let off the gas under heavy acceleration? I mean, is OK to have the trans it shift at 4.5 or 5k or is this terrible for the car? I was turning on to a highway, and I needed to go pretty fast and I let it shift up in this range (and it was still really smooth).

The cpmuter will stop before you get into the RPM'* that can cause damage. But it'* not the nicest to the car to do that consistantly...but every once in a while it'* alright I think.

Not true. The trans from 87-91 isn't computer controlled. Just don't make a habit of shifting ALL the time near redline. Do it when you need to, and you'll be fine.

Yeah, bill is right. Our engines are worthless passed 4.5k.. you hear that noise the engine makes at that RPM? That is the sound of it begging for mercy. There really isn't a point to revving that far. However, when you do it, it isn't a problem.. no worries, mate

Yea a wide open throttle run on occasion might clear some carbon but i doubt it. I've had my car into the redline several times with no negative effect but i wouldn't recommend it. I'm not sure the exact RPM but it was on a LG3 and those redline pretty low. I believe i had it about 5500 when i quit. So who knows. And thats with 205k miles and a 100k timing chain.

YES! 1993SLE, you are correct. You know that feeling when you stretch in the morning after waking up? You know how good that feels? Well, that'* what it does to the engine. With more RPM, it stretches bearings and everything, which makes the piston go up higher. This is why you don't want a teen with a grandpa-owned car. Mainly because if that car never saw redline, teen goes to redline, BAM burning oil. Blew the oil seals. It sucks, but it is the truth. Also, back in the day, it was called an "Italian Tune up" when your car [carburated] was acting up, and just running like ****, you give a good WOT, to clear out all the **** in the combustion chamber. My dad said that just about always fixed whatever driveablity problems his car had. Basically, once the engine has warmed up, and reached operating temperature. You get on the highway, and let the car shift at redline, that is great for an engine. If you do this before reaching operating temp.. it'* not quite as good. And if you do that all the time, that isn't good either. However, I would like to see you go redline on each shift that car has. Not easy, is it?

mine shifted into 2nd at about 5500 rpm, but would hold second beyond that until i chickend out and let off. infact, that was when we hit 6k rpm was when it downshifted into second. why second was different then first was beyond me.

Well mine will hold every gear at WOT until i let up the pedal. I've never had it click down by itself if i've got it wide open. I've always had to give it a little nudge less throttle to get the next gear. Comes in handy.
