grrrrrr , it never fails, whenever i think im in the clear for a while, BOOM something happens.... i know its gonna fail with flying colors the catalytic converter is bad, and im pretty much sure the o2 sensor is shot. so exhaust wise, what should i do? should i have it replaced with a factory style catalytic converter and muffler? or should i have a better system put on? anyone got any ideas on it (i dont see much on this forum about 87-91 exhaust)

New Jersey FINALLY got a little smarter when it comes to vehicle instpections. New car buyers are exempt from inspections for the first four years. After that, you have to go every 2 years. And they only test emissions if your car does not have OBD I or II.(sounds like Obladi and Oblada - oh well, life goes on - BRA).
If you have an OBD vehicle, they turn your car off, then they turn it on to see if the Check Engine/MIL Light goes ON. If it stays ON, you fail emissions, if it goes OFF, well, obviously you pass the emissions test. It you don't have an OBD equiped car(like my '84 Corilla) then they take it jogging on a tread mill with a probe up its a$$ to test the emssions. Other than that, it'* Headlights, Tail Lights, Stop Lights, Directional Lights, Horn, Wipers, Brake Distribution, E-Brake Operation, Shocks/Strut Test, Gas Cap Pressurization Test, No Cracks in the Glass/Windsheild, and no missing mirrors.

If you are going to go with a new muffler, you can always do what I did, and go with the magnaflow from the f-body cars, single in dual out.

One really important thing when you go for the test, run your car for a good 30 minutes to an hour before the test and when you get there DO NOT turn your car off. alot of cars fail cause they are not warmed up properly. It may be just enough to get you by.
