Who knows when the bonneville'* switched from a 85 MPH speedo or whatever that stupid goverment mandate in the late 80'* was to a 120 MPH or whatever the newer bonne'* use. I just happened to come across a 1987 that a lady gave me for FREE. Course it needed a tranny, but that'* a different story. So now that it works i'm going after the little things that bug me on the car, and one thing i want to do is swap the original cluster with a higher-mph one from a newer model. I know they must have switched them in 90 or 91, cause i have seen them i just don't know exactly what years to track down. Someone on here'* gotta know. Thanks
I can't say for sure if it is the model year or the trim level that determined the style of the speed-o. My 90 SSE has the 120 MPH.

I was just thinking of the possibility of this the other day. I took a long road trip at 80-85 and thought "this would be a lot cooler looking if the speedo only went to 85". Instead, on the speedo that goes to 110 (115 not numbered), 85 doesn't look too impressive. I am not actually thinking of doing the swap, but unless you do a lot of driving over 85mph, I wanted to remind you of the cool factor you may be losing

Mine is numbered through 110, with a hash mark for 115. Of course, it'* just the basic three gauge set. An '89 with the full gauge set might be different.
If I recall correctly, they also changed the way the gauges looked when they changed how high the speedo read. The old ones had more hash marks, I think. The newer ones (mine included) have a hash mark for every 5 mph, while I think that the old ones had a mark for each mph. But that'* just from memory, going through the junkyard a while back.

Both of mine go up to 120mph. The LE three guager in 87-89 [I believe it changed in 90-91], only goes up to 85. The wiring changes from LE, SE, to SSE clusters... don't even bother. You'll never succeed.
