Hey anyone know how hard to change a fuel pump in an 89 sse

First of all, do you have the FSM for her? That'* my recomendation for the first purchase. After that, it'* all child'* play.. or so so that way with a big breaker bar . The tank has to be dropped.. which I hear isn't the most fun thing to do. To save some effort on your part, try to get all the gas out first. Other than that, I can't contribute anymore. Except if you notice any of your fuel/brake lines rusting, replace them while you are there. You will thank me later.

Did it last spring on mine - hard part is getting the gas out. Because there are baffles in the tank it is very difficult to get a siphon hose to the bottom - I found it impossible from the filler neck, had to remove the hoses from the tank and insert there.

Only real caveat, USE A DELCO FUEL PUMP. Others do not seem to last long and are noisy while they do work.

Also replace the sock and filter at the same time.

Factory Service Manual

mmmmmmmmm, factory service manual. i have the haynes manual, thats pretty good. $15 at autozone. how does that compare to the FSM?

They don't compare whatsoever. I too have a Haynes manual, and it doesn't have nearly as much as my FSM does. I have about 3x as much info, and mine isn't for 85-02 cars.. that'* a LONG range. If anything mine may apply to '88 Bonneville'* too, however in '90 there were several changes, that may not make mine as accurate, and for '91 is the same story.

Haynes manual is pretty good if you are thinking about buying a car and want to know how hard it is to work on. I keep one in the TranSport in case I need something quick on a trip since it fits anyware.

Also have the full FSM and a copy of the Parts and Accessories catalog and a copy of all the TSBs (technical service bulletins) issued after the FSM was published for use when I want to do something major. If you are serious about keeping and working on an older car, you really need all three.

Service manuals are usually relatively easy to come by (usually even available new from Helm for a stiff price). P&A and TSBs are a little harder to come by. Hardest are the Delco Radio service manuals for anything newer than 1985. Impossible is anything on the ECM, that requires a good hacker (GM-ECM is a good place to start).

There is an increasing movement to get the FSM and P&As online - the Reatta club (www.reatta.net ) has the 93 P&A, assorted TSBs, and FSMs for three of the four years the car was built all with the knowledge and permission of GM - tremendous amount of information on the 3800 "C" and "L" drivetrains including 440T4, 4T60, and 4T60E transmissions.
