Default check engine?

I have an 89 LE. either the ign module or the coilpack is bad cuz it misses and the bottom left terminal doesn't ground to the screw when i remove the spark plug wire. would a miss cause the check engine light to come on? cuz mine doesn't

The procedure for checking codes is in the techinfo area that can be found from the link at the top of the page.

After that..do you have the original Magnavox one big coilpack ignition or have you upgraded to the next version?

If you are having issues and prove it out, it is probably your most cost effective way. Actaully I can guarantee it'* cost effective for you.

Yes... For the price of replacing a bad coil pack I highly reccomend upgrading to the Type 2 coil set up..

no no no... i know its either the pack (magnavox) or the module. I'm going to have the module tested at work (adv auto prts)

my question was... would a miss like this cause the check engine light to come on? because if it should, it doesn't.

what was that about upgrading from the single magnavox pack?

There is an upgrade that can be done on yoru igntion system. It was known that the magnavox setup was weak and vunerable at best. You can swap the newer style ICM/coils onto your car if you pick up a mounting plate, ICM and 3 coils. This upgrade throws a better spark and improves mileage/performance from what I have heard.

These cars use the old ECM.... They were not that great at diagnosing or telling you therte was an issue untill it was really bad... They could miss like crazy and may never get an SES light from it...

The Module may be bad but test good... Make sure you test it enough for it to get warm...

Exactly why I wanted you to test it many times over... I have seen people test it once and go " oh its fine no problems " Later to have problems...lol

The ECM'* in the 88-91 3800 Bonneville were a decent step ahead of the 87 2.8'* ECM... But they still were not close to the ones we use today...lol
