Default car will only start in-- problem found. 4/18/08

for the last 3 weeks the car takes about 20 minutes to get it started in park.. but when i switch to neutral it starts in about 3-5 minutes of trying to start her up...

then today the car got stuck in drive and would not shoift out of it but the shifter moved freely.. so i opened the hood and found the linkage cable to have been disconnected.. so i put it back in place and i was able to shift in to all the gears..

but the car still wont start in park..

i believe it might be the neutral saftey switch.. can anyone else vouch for this..

and where is the neutral saftey switch anyway....?

thanks ya,ll

Sounds like a neutral safety switch to me also....

Should be mounted on the top of the trans where the linkage hooks in....

don't you think the real problem that needs to be addressed are the MINUTES it takes to start the car?

i have no clue where the switch is.. do i get to it from under the hood or under the car...

just called autozone and the switch is $71.49 for a damn switch..

is this something i can get from the junk yard?

doesn't that have to do with a bad neutral safety switch not letting the car start.?

i mean it does not even crank to attempt to turn over... but i get full battery power..

i was thinking starter but this happens to often to be a dead started to me as a starter will just not work at all if it is bad..

but when i sit and play with the shifter for a while the car will start..

the switch may just be out of alignment.

it is on the top of the trans. you will see the shifter cable attached to it. there are 2 13mm bolts to remove. but if you just loosen them you can adjust. if you have a scanner with live data, thats the easiest way to know when to tighten it up. but not needed.

so when my shifter cable came loose today from the switch could that have caused any issues..

the car got stuck in drive and the shifter was moving freely so i opened the hood and seen a lil white plastic ring type of thing just hanging there so i put in back on and then i was able to shift fine but still not start the car.. not even a jump start worked.. i just sat for 2 hours and played with the shifter back and forth untill it started right up..

also is it possible for the switch to have just come unaligned out of no where.. i mean it started as a lil issue but progressed very quickly...and the bolts seem pretty tight..

Few people reaslise this, but the switch does more than just "switch".

1)It'* a neutral safety switch. Y'all already knew that though.
2) It'* connected electrically to the starter. So it has to handle high current at short duration.
3) It'* the gear decoder for the PCM. This tells the PCM whether or not it is in P/N or in gear, so it can adjust the fuel, spark, and idle maps accordingly.
4) It'* the reverse lamp turn-on.

When you install this switch, you will need to have an extra set of hands helping you to "dial it in". Get everything installed, but keep the bolts loose on it. Put the gear selector in "neutral", and have your helper hold the key down while you slightly rotate the switch. Instruct your helper that as soon as the engine starts to crank, let off on the key. Tighten the switch down, then check the neutral operation again. Once you verify it, throw it in park, and try it again. It SHOULD work.

PWNED....

I wouldn't bother with one from a bone yard.....

Chances are, you could do something to line it up better or something if your cable was loose, it could also be part of the problem.

It sits on the top of the trans, underneath the air box....where the linkage comes to the trans....at least on 92-99 cars, I suspect earlier should/could be the same.
