Yes, that is what is required. I have an 18" breaker bar that does the trick.. but 12" works for me too. Depends on how strong you are.. but the breaker bar is the best bet.. because if you have a cheaply made 3/8" wrench and you put on an extension.. you may break it. But, Craftsman is all that sits in my tool box, and I only cracked one socket.. but that was on my head bolts.. so that was excusable.

i wouldn't say a 2ft breaker / wrench is required at all. I use a regular ft long and thats more than enough. I used an 8" socket wrench once but I think 1 ft breaker is best. Usually, once you move the tensioner the first time, its not as hard to get into motion again (until it sits again i.e till the next tim you have to take the belt off).

I just wanna make sure you dont think its hard to take the belt off. The one thing is, there is little clearence for a breaker bar and its socket to fit in there so make sure you don't buy one of those long sockets because chances are it wont fit in there with your socket wrench / breaker bar behind it

yeah a 2ft breaker isnt required

ok man heres another trick start you car disconnect the negative side of the battery
Does it stay runninng or Die?
if it stays running your alt is good and doing its job and you could have a bad battery
if it dies your alt is bad

what are the torque numbers on that bolt? i know its no more than about 45 foot pounds

Please do not do the above to any computer controlled car as this is very hard on the electronics of the car, this may have been fine in the days of old with non computer controled cars and trucks...
ohhh, back in the day when you could only fit 3 gears in a tranny

Thanks all!! I'll just replace it as it'* about time anyway. it would be fine for the first half an hour when running then the voltage would decrease.

If I remember correctly, our transmissions do have only 3 real gears, overdrive is handled by the torque converter

you sure? i've tried counting the gear changes in my trans and i've never fealt a 4th gear kick in (unless i wanted to count the TCC activation as a 4th gear).

Plus our gear selectors say P R (D) D 2 1
with the (D) meaning (i thought) overdrive, i.e. in (D), the TCC kicks in when it should, while in D, 2, or 1 (no TCC ever kicks in.

This would also make sense with my thought of only 3gears + OD because you have it listed in front of you as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 3rdOD (i.e. a '4th so to say')

But i've never been 100% sure on the subject anyways.

thoughts? I thinkt here may have been various threads in the past discussing this sort of thing so maybe a search could help us. anyone not feeling lazy? i know i am.
