Default 89 Bonne SSE Prob

My bro has a 89 Bonne SSE and when it starts its like its barly running and when you hit the gas its like a chug chug sound. I did plugs wires air filter just a few weks ago. The Check Engine Light is on and some times it stalls at stop. Did fuel filter just a few months back. New CAT. I have an idea what it is but he wanted me to post and see what you tought. Thank Ya

does it have fuel injection? if so maybe one of the injectors are clogged, just an idea...
try using a bottle of injector cleaner through it.

I put some fuel treatment in and the SES light went off but it still acts like its getting choked like posted before. I was thinking EGR because there is a sound coming from the back of the engine... What do you think??
