Find the approved repair shop and have them reset and recertify the miles if you want to do it legally. They should do this for a small fee I would think.

GM told me that I can buy a "refurbished" cluster for $375. Then another $160+ tax for installation. I didn't feeil like shelling out $500 for a damn cluster on a 15 year old car. So I bought the used one from a wrecker out of another 89 SE that had 320K (I know I'm repeating...sorry)

Now according to my Midas boys, I have to go to the Ministry of Transportation, tell them the situation. They will document the existing kilometres as showing on the odometer and record what the new-used one says. Take the difference and go from there. So, if and when I want to sell, there will be an accurate record of what the odometer says and what the car actually has accumulated.

I hope the Ministry will have a list of shops that are licensed to refurbish dash clusters and not be too expensive.

Here'* hoping :(

Latest update (April 8 2003)

I spoke with the MTO and they told me that the only time they would have to get involved is if the newer instrument cluster containing an odometer and/or trip clock read lower then what the current odo/trip says

Makes sense to me. I just have to keep the records of the my latest servicing and let any potential purchaser know what the score really is regarding the odometer.

Lets see: 320580-182100= 138480.

Any increase on the new odometer, I must now subtract 138 480. My new favourtie numbers....138480 :P oye...

Default thats funny

mine has not moved in who knows how long but i dont have the time nor the patience to go report it to a ministry i cant even keep this car on the road for a month with out serious mechanical upkeep. I love my car but this is starting to be more trouble than it is worth. Might be looking for a second form of transportion very soon.

Default Hey me too!

My odometer just stopped working last week. It doesn't move at all, neither does the trip. If this winter ever ends I'll take a closer look in behind the dash. It'* stuck at 262012km right now.

Hey Blk...its seems that this is a common problem. Have you ever pulled the thing out? Its all one unit. Looks like a big *** circuit board.

You got more life out of your then I did, check out Cooksville wreckers in Mississauga, they pulled one out for me for $50 dollars.

I'm going to try and save some money and do it myself....I have Chiltons..that should help

Have you got a manual to figure it out?

Looks relatively easy, just gotta watch the wires, plugs and lights...194-R I believe, should be fun this weekend

Doesn't it suck when that happens!!! :?:

Ha, at least your odo stil works, I have only racked up 2 kms since it stopped working, go figure, its got a mind of its own.

In May my father and I are going to rip up my dash and replace the cluster, the kms, as you know are going to read higher, but maybe it will work, oh and maybe my coolant temp sensor gage might work too...LOL

Oh, and stupid gas gage it was reading between the 3/4 empty and E on Saturday, so, since I have no trip clock anymore....I filled up, RLD only sucked back 37 litres...I HAVE A 68 LITRE TANK!!! WTF ROFL...

Numbers work sooo much better then wonky *** gages
