"Humping" is when they are changing cars around, and they just push it and then let it go, coasting until it hits the next car and the glad-hands latch together.
They call it "humping" because they sometimes us a hill or "hump" at one end of the yard to shoot the cars down instead of pushing them with an engine. When they do it that way, the cars can hit pretty hard.
The car in the picture has some kind of electronics on board that don't like the hard impact of the cars smashing into each other during humping, probably GPS or track-testing equipment.
