Try this link for some good info Gear ratio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For quick off the line acceleration you want a higher ratio.
For better fuel economy you want a lower ratio.
High performance cars usually run a 3.73:1 or a 4.10:1

Ok, the trans in my bonne is out of a lesabre with the 3.05 ratio which gets 31 mpg and is sluggish of the line but hauls around 3500 rpm.

Bonnevilles have 2.93 or some ****. Which is fine because an l67 with light mods can break the tires loose up until around 30mph. Any higher gear than that and you better have an LSD.

All figures are 96+
NA'* should have either a 2.84 or 3.05/3.06 stock ratio. SC'd would have 2.93
Most people changing gears in their SC'd car go to 3.29 or 3.69 ratios. Overall the highter the number the better for acceleration if you can hold traction. The lower the number the better for highway crusing and fuel mileage.

alright so even though i have the 3.05 ratio, could i still modify the engine so it would compensate for the sluggish tranny.

Sure, there are things you can do to move it out better.
Ported lower intake manifold
Less restrictive air filter
Gutted airbox or FWI
Rocker arms to a better ratio
Ported or freed up front exhaust manifold
and the list is much longer.
My suggestion would be to call Intense-Racing and talk to them. They have some great solutions as well search the various forums out there. Tons of great info can be found. Do a ton of research and plan out your mods before spending and you'll be into the power for as little as possible.
