No the 98+ pcm is diffrent from the 96-97 PCMS. Also the 96 has the 4T60E transmission.

I think he is speaking of a Olds LSS with a L67, not L36.

I believe you are mistakened . GM changed to the 4t65E after 97 There may have been some left overs but I don't think they would have gone as far as 1998 production year.

Back on topic....

The only tuner that will support the 96-97 PCM is DHP, that would be best your best bet.

Main article: Turbo-Hydramatic 125
The 4T60 was the transitional model from the old Hydramatic to the new electronically-controlled transverse family. Introduced in 1984 on the 1985 C-bodies, it was enhanced with electronic controls to become the 4T60-E in 1991. By the mid-1990s, the 4T60-E was the transmission of choice in nearly every front-wheel drive GM vehicle. A heavy-duty 4T60-E HD was introduced in 1993 for the supercharged GM 3800 engine. The 4T60-E was phased out in favor of the 4T65 beginning in 1997.

The 4T60 featured a 245 mm torque converter.

Applications:

4T60-E
1994–1996 Chevrolet Beretta/Corsica V6 3.1 L
1992–1996 Chevrolet Lumina APV V6 3.4 L/3.8 L
1996 Buick Park Avenue V6 3.8 L
1992-1999 Buick Lesabre V6 3.8 L
1993–1996 Chevrolet Lumina/Monte Carlo V6 3.1 L/3.4 L
1997–1999 Chevrolet Lumina/Monte Carlo V6 3.1 L
1997– Chevrolet Malibu V6 3.1 L
1997–1998 Chevrolet Venture V6 3.4 L
1992-1997 Pontiac Bonneville 3800 V6

beyond the point though like the guy said DHP might be the simple solution but will that PCM support mods like a 2000 PCM would be able to, is there a diffrence with DHP PCMs?

From what I understand you need to mail DHP the PCM with the vin of the car and you need to tell them how you want it programed. If you need a core from another car a 96 PA Ultra is your best bet. It cannot come from a 96 SSEi as the PCMs are different to my understanding.
