Default Hot running SII?

A friend of mine has a 1997 Olds. Eighty eight, low miles (54xxx). It seems to run fine except one thing, it runs hot. I grabbed a picture of the gauge because i know some other members have the same car so they can compare. I know the car does use some oil but no coolant that i know of.

Seems a little high to me. Anyone else?

Coolant flush?
180 stat?
Catalytic converter?

Lots of possibilities. Even a hot-running trans can overheat a motor.

Ok i'll definately do that. These people are the kind that kind of let things go until they make themselves apparent before they fix them. I'll have to let her know.

Interesting topic....

The 94 Olds 88 that I'm having so many issues with seems to run "hot" too. The thing is, when it'* at 210 or so, the fans don't kick on. Seems that when the guage reads 220ish, is when the fans kick on.

Makes me wonder if the instrument clusters in these cars aren't calibrated correctly. I highly doubt my car runs THAT hot.

I just replied to another thread.

If possible get a scanner on it to see the actual PCM temp reading. My 95 cluster is pretty far off and like this pic..it'* not linear.

In the case of both cars..when running around in traffic do the fans come on and at what temp according to the gauge. I'd assume with the summer we have had that every car'* fans have been tested by the heat.

Thats the same instriment cluster I have to the tee. Mine, even with the 180 T-stat runs WAY hotter than that. I'm guessing 125* before it cools back down. This is only during hot 85* days during idle/ WOT conditions. On the highway it stays at 190*ish.

Check the actual reading with a scanner..........my car is 15* cooler than the guage reads
