As mentioned..the K&N site has great information on how to tell when it'* time to clean.
IIRC they encourage some particles on it to help with filtering.
And to give you an idea of how often.. I run an FWI w/o any protection from the elements in New England. It was barely used when I got it and put it right on, then ran it about 15,000 miles. It looked dirty from the winter, snow and sand.
Yes..since getting it in Decemeber, I've needed to clean and reoil once.
