Trying to help out my dad...left turn signal works, right signal does not work. hazard lights all work. Mechanic checked bulbs...OK. Mechanic diagnosed problem as "no power getting to the signal". $450 to replace "part" that is causing the problem. What part is he talking about and does this cost make sense? Thanks.

Sounds like the turn signal switch may be bad, if that is the problem then the switch is quite expensive, the switch is from 225.00 to 275.00, I recommend the AC Delco switch, I see two switches listed at RockAuto, so I recommend going to rockauto.com and looking up the turn signal switch, and look at the pics of the 2 AC Delco models they sell, I think the lower ACDELCO Part # D6243D is the one you need, but I am not 100% sure.
Mechanics always mark up the prices a bit, so that part, along with labor sounds about right at the quote given.
I tried to find some DIY videos in case you wanted to save around 175.00, all I could find was a video of the switch being replaced on a Buick Century, I am pretty sure the process to replace it is similar on our PA'*.


The only other thing I can think of that has been known to go bad in PA'* around year is the Flasher unit, the flasher unit is not too expensive, but it is a pain to get to, here is a part number, and a video of a forum member replacing their flasher unit.

As William stated, its either the flasher relay or the turn signal switch. I would start by changing the relay.

Why don't you ask the mechanic which part he wants to replace?

Thanks guys. Great info. Upon further questioning of my father, I found out that the part you guys tell me should be $225 - $275...mechanic was going to charge $450. Mechanics labor...$200. Total cost...$650. Every time my father takes his car to this "crook" mechanic, I review the bill...after the fact. Every time he rips dad off on parts cost. I've been telling him to stop going to this guy. Maybe this time it will sink in.

That is roughly around what any mechanic is going to charge you for the part, they markup the part to help them pay for shop fees they have to pay to keep their shop going, end the end they really do not make a killing, all mechanics mark up most items from around 30-40%.
I do think 200.00 labor is a tad bit much, especially if the switch is as fairly easy to replace as it was in that Buick Century video.


I had another thought if you were to try to fix this for him, or you know a buddy that can, then maybe consider checking a local salvage yard, I am betting you could find the part a lot cheaper there, it would be used though.

many "service" people charge 100 percent of what they get the parts for, which is discounted usually. my dad was an electrician and he would bid that way and usually get the jobs, the other guys must be quoting even more. bottom line is its standard practice and if you go to a different shop it will likely be the same. pretty much why i started working on my own cars, i didnt have any money but i had time
