I suppose I should probably clarify NY DMV laws for window tint....

I read the law myself, and it'* split into two classes of vehicle.

For sedans, coupes, station wagons: Rear window & 6" down on the windshield (or to the AS1 line, whichever is lower), you can have it as dark as you want it, as long as you have two side view mirrors that are adjusted to give a full view behind the vehicle. All other windows (including the rest of the windshield) are a minimum of 70% VLT (visible light transmission).

For Multipurpose passenger vehicles, vans, and trucks: Rear window and windshield are the same specs, same mirror rules apply. Front side windows are minimum 70% VLT, and the rear side windows can be as dark as you want.
