So, the rear wheel drive trans is a 4L60E? What tranny do you plan on putting in later to handle all the newly found power?

01BonneSC 09-20-2007 01:17 PM

DANG!!!! I WANT BOTH!!!

the 4L60E should handle plenty, you can upgrade the "prone to breakage" parts with a kit (GM i think still sells it) and make it a 4L65E...... then there is always the 4L80E, and the kit to make it a 4L85E.

avex 09-20-2007 09:03 PM

My daily driver is a 1999 Holden Calais, the big project is a 1967 Hr Holden Special, originally came with a single carb 186ci Column shift manual.

Yeah we have the 4L60e in most of our older Commodore range (Calais is part of that range), our HSV (performance division) upgraded to the 4L65e on some later models. I am going to get the 4L60e fully built by a guy here that has had good success but I am trying to get some fairly big numbers with the HR so I am not sure if it will handle it.

you could put in a turbo 400 with some gear vendors gear spliter. It'll esentially make it a 6speed. Or you could slap a manual behind it.

sqela 09-21-2007 12:40 PM

Good stuff right there. Kinda weird seeing the steering wheel on the right side

avex 09-21-2007 01:05 PM

Haha, I think it's a bit strange seeing your engine facing the wrong way

Bonneville92V688 09-21-2007 01:06 PM

Have any videos of the Calais? I wanna see what a RWD L67 can do.

lash 09-21-2007 01:08 PM

Believe me when I say that there are many that would love to have the engine facing north-south on ours. Then there's the little detail of not having a drive train tunnel through/under the cabin. :D

avex 09-21-2007 01:36 PM

I don't have any videos yet, hopefully my new setup will be running soon and I can get some soon.

DarkShadow 09-21-2007 04:35 PM

So THATS what the Cadillac Catera came from...........

GonneVille 09-22-2007 12:12 AM

The HELL, with the 4Lxx, just go straight to the 6L80...

I love that car. Striking is the best word for it, I think. Beautiful lines.

BTW, does that intercooler fit the FWD format?

avex 09-22-2007 01:02 AM

Yeah I am pretty sure the cooler would fit fine, it's just a w2a core like you guys run. We run into bonnet clearance issues if we have too thick a core as the snout is lifted where our bonnet slopes downwards. Our a2a design would need a fair bit of modification for you guys, and I don't think it would really be worth it.

I would love a six speed, how hard would the change over be?

radomirthegreat 09-23-2007 03:54 AM

Those are amazing cars! Welcome to the BC, and thanks so much for the pictures!

:talk: I disagree. It makes it very easy to change the front 3 spark plugs!

avex 09-23-2007 08:17 AM

but... i can also change the other three quite easily :)

ooo that hb looks nice 8)

GonneVille 09-25-2007 12:49 AM

Wait, why would you overdrive the HB? You'd be spinning all the accessories faster, not just the S/C, and adding load. The usual method is to overdrive just the S/C pulley, by making it smaller... :?

Only the supercharger drivebelt is overdriven. It doesn't run anything but the blower, all the accessories are on the inner drive:
Attachment 41892

It also allows me to run an 8-rib belt supercharger belt and is SFI approved.

that just made me pee my pants a lil....

RWD L67.... man that must be a fun a$$ car to drive. It looks to me that the Aussies have better parts for our cars, I vote we move the Bonneville Club down under

It is opel.

I know the toliets flush counter clockwise down there. Does that hold true for the superchargers too

They are good fun to drive... and yeah superchargers still spin the right way... mines just not as fast as it should be yet  Had a lttle meet up (only a few cars) on the weekend. I was the only one that didn't wash my car... or have an Intercooler set up... dammit.

The other night I was cruising home from work at 11:30 and my car started to miss really badly. I couldn't hear any sign of anything mechanical going wrong. I organised a tow home and then the next night to a mates place. We tried all the obvious fixes and found nothing until we pulled the rocker covers off and checked the rockers, this is what we found:

Attachment 39552Attachment 39553

The car was running FIT reworked 1.97:1 ratio rockers. There have now been a few cases of these rockers and bent pushrods. The ratio ona nother set has been measured and was apparently found to vary significantly.

We checked for obvious damage to the lifters, valves as best we could and compression tested and it seemed okay. We replaced the valve spring and re-installed standard GM 1.65:1 ratio rockers and new pushrods and the Calais feels like it is running quite well... hoping to have my new heads ready in the next few weeks so we can inspect further... argh.

93-SSE 11-02-2007 12:18 PM

Oh man, Ouch :?

good luck, hope you get things going again soon!

radomirthegreat 11-02-2007 12:20 PM

Wow, that was quite a high ratio for those rockers. I couldn't find in the post that you had replaced the bent pushrods. Are those doing well, then?

avex 11-02-2007 12:31 PM

Opps, left that out. We replaced all the pushrods as it seemed with the variences that they were hitting on the casting flash a little. Enough to mark them all.

These 1.97's have been a disappointment. Yella Terra are the way I am going for my next set.

I was suprised to see people running 1.97s down there. I know 1.95 is the largest raito we have in the states and it was said to be the max before hitting the casting flash.
