What causes that change in tone as soon as the engine hits 5500 rpm. Actually doesn't sound that bad from the standpoint of getting ones adrenaline going..........to pass it that is.

That is the VTEC. It kicks in and engages all 16 valves to make it more powerful on the top end. This is why most Hondas are so good on gas, and won't race cars from a dead stop. Between idle-5500rpms, it only uses 8 valves.

VTEC engages a different camshaft profile to alter valve lift and duration, not actual valve operation itself. You're still going to be using 16 valves all the time.
