6 or 12 point wrenches???
i would get 6 point everything, 12 are nice but i have never seen a 12point on a car. the good stuff that you use all the time should be six point 3/8 set, 6 point 1/4 and 6 point 1/2 in drive sets. using 12point stuff on 6 is too risky. you will find that out fast if you work on the first car or two thats a little older
Another tidbit of useful info. If you come across el-cheapo sockets/wrenches at yard sales, buy them. Every once in awhile, you have to use a hammer to "install" a socket onto a nut/bolt. Why use a good one when you can use a cheap socket.
i like using the craftsman ones, because if you do hammer it on there and it breaks you can just take it back. and if you wait till black friday they have them all on sale for like 50% off. i beat the heck out of mine for like the last ten years and finally broke the first socket yesterday, i was putting bearings on my monte and i was using a half inch drive wrench on a 3/8 the drive deep socket which i frequently do and like i said have never broken one even doing that. the only other sears tool i have broke is the 1/2 in ratchet wore out because i was using it with a big bar, traded it in no big deal. i have maybe 200 into short and deep 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 6point metric and standard full sets. you dont have to buy the best from the start, if you buy a cheaper set like that and replace what you break with better stuff you will be better off in the long run. my 12point stuff i found used for a good deal i dont use it very often so thats good enough.
I also have an old set of napa sockets of each drive for those "pound on sockets" lol never knew though that theres a special set of sockets for stripped off lug nuts!! I spent way to much time torching off a stud that I couldn't get free lol
I know this is an old thread,
my hand tool sockets are 12 point and my impact sockets are 6 point, and if I need a 6 point I use the impact sockets,
since many companies will not warranty there 12 point sockets when used with a impact wrench,

12 point wrenches are the way to go but socket wise I personally have 12 point chrome sockets and 6 point impact sockets. I would not recommend 12 point impact sockets unless you are putting them on 12 point fasteners. Also for as often as you see 12 point fasteners if you would need to use an impact you would be fine to use the chrome. Just would not recommend day in and day out use with chrome on the impact.
