Replace fuel pump/sender 96-99*
You can replace the sender only. Although if you have noticed your pump being noisy, you will probably be back in there sooner or later. Hopefully it'* later.
Be careful on the plastic lines getting them off the sender. I find soaking them with penetrating oil for 10+ minutes helps tremendously. If the black end piece and o-rings stay on the sender..work them off as gently as you can. I've found the 1/4" 9mm-11mm sockets in my rack will help reinstall them and click the black piece back in place. This is the WTF.. why does GM want $75 for each of these 3 foot plastic lines fix. I've been lucky about 5 times getting the black end piece back off the sender line to put them back together, so yes..it'* possible.
Only other advice I'd give is blow the top of the tank around the lock ring off before you start and then again as you first start moving the ring to keep all the dirt you can from entering the tank.
If there are any questions, here a pic of a 96-99 basic tank. (98-99 had an additional evap sensor on it)
Sender with pump. (Note my pump is connected via a rubber hose, most are not)
The normal connector between the pump and sending unit
And the sender from the other side
