Engine swap ??
hi. got a question. i picked up a decent 1998 chevy 4x4 (old body style). has a blown engine (5.3vortec). wandering if i can swap that engine with a 305 i have out of a 1994 chevy without to many issues ? any body have any thoughts on that. ?

not sure if there would be any motor mount or bell housing issues but if there are they shouldn't be insumountable, I would think that the electronics would be the biggest stumbling block. In addition chevy has made a lot of great small blocks, the 305 wasn't one of them, to underpowered being the main issue in my opinion.

ya a little under powered for sure but in my experience the 305 seems to last longer than the 350. may just be my bad luck with the 350? i drive mainly hwy miles hardly ever pull anything. just 89 miles round trip to work so i have had good luck with the 305. guess i'll maybe just pull it out and see what the difference is.

I wouldn't advise it. Gm didn't come out with the true vortec till 96. So that said driveability issues will result. It simply will not run right. I know this cause we had a customer do the same swap. The cylinder heads are not the same to the tbi engines and the crankshaft sensor was also added. There would be some adding and removing to swap this engine.

the 98 is a vortec 5.7 and like mentioned it wont run let alone run right, the computer and support stuff after 96 is very flaky if you try to do anything different with it. pretty decent engines once you get it running right though and there are enough in the yards still to be decent price

ya i was hoping to find the 5L and put in a new chip for the 5 L but we will see. there is not a whole lot available up here. i am on the canadian side right on the US border with international falls MN. 5 minute ride to the US. there are none around at the moment. and funny thing is around my town they want $1500 to $2000 fir one from a junk yard and just across the border they want$500. big difference.

yep i guess so. i paid 2500 for my whole yukon with one in it. it had a couple lights but maybe 300 later it was good. how big of a deal would it be to buy one in the us and bring it back?

it wouldnt be to hard to get one in the US and bring it over i have the salvage yard in International falls searching for one but none close by as of yet. i was running the truck the other day and the first 10 minutes of idling it runs great and quiet but then oil pressure drops right off and it starts to knock. maybe just ab oil pump??? or shaft on distributor?? any thoughts on that.

might be the pump, might be seals, might be a little of both. the seals, lower and upper intake, pan, rear and front seal, are all pretty common failures on this engine. most people end up getting the felpro updated kit they have and watch the upper manifold takes inch lbs so it could very easily warp
