1999 Suburban noise, transmission or Torque Convertor
Hi all. New to the forum. I have a whining noise that has gradually gotten worse and am trying to determine where it is coming from. Ruled out the power steering pump after removing the serpentine belt. The noise is present in DRIVE or REVERSE, not present in PARK or NEUTRAL. The pitch changes with RPM and is present in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear. Can't hear it when cruising down the highway. I've also noticed a slight shudder once in awhile when cruising about 50-55.
The truck has about 157K miles, but had the tranny replaced at 90K. My brother was the original owner and said the torque convertor was not replaced, so this is what I'm thinking is the problem. There are no shifting problems, just the annoying whine. Any suggestions? I recorded a video but saw no where to post.

Sounds to me like the front pump is making noise when the line pressure is boosted up. I would pull the pan and look for metallic glitter in the oil. If there is metal present your transmission probably isn't long for life.

Thanks "75" and "GUNS" for the reply. I neglected to mention the sound has been there most the summer and I did change the tranny fluid and filter about 2 weeks ago and it was fairly dirty, but it made no difference.
When I get under the vehicle while in DRIVE or REVERSE (parking brake on and wheels chocked), the sound can be heard near the tranny, so doesn't make sense to be anything in drivetrain since vehicle not in motion. The whine pitch is very consistent with the RPM. If coasting down a hill and letting off the gas, the RPM and whine tone down until accelerating, depends on demand for power from engine.
