The Bose system front speakers went out in my '98 SSEi, lefts one day and the rights about a week later. My FSM is in NJ.

DO the Bose systems have something different about them, like an amplifier or equalizer somewhere downstream from the HU? I swapped in a regular HU. The fronts were still out, and the backs got really weird, like an overload mismatch in the line gain.

Any help would be appreciated. I have some NOS Infinity speakers sitting around and would be quite happy just to swap in the basic HU with the new speakers..

Last I knew, the Bose and Monsoon systems have an amp downstream somewhere. Usually the amp is located behind the carpet in the trunk or underneath the trunk lid depending on the application. Wait, I think yours sits behind the plastic directly in front of the shifter, but below the HU/HVAC deck.

And last time I played with both the Monsoon and Bose system they were a 2 ohm system.

most of the stock ones are 2 ohm. but that means you cant use regular after market speakers because it will be even quieter than stock. the hu should be different. i would guess the speakers are bad maybe the amp but less likely. if it were mine i would just get aftermarket setup wire the speakers directly to a higher power aftermarket hu. ive done that to every one of my cars except my 98 bonnie because my wife wont let me touch it, otherwise it would have been gone 10 yrs ago.

Thanks. I'll trace the leads and see what I run into. It makes more sense that there is an in-series amp besides the HU. It might even be a bypass unit which powers the front channels. The Bose "equalization" is probably some independent feedback circuit for the rear speakers (or some gizmo on the rear speakers themselves.) Sometimes simple is so much better. I have a standard OEM HU/Amp in my '95 with Infinity speakers and some minor Dynamat work. Sounds great.

I'll push ahead, see what I find, and report back for the record.
