Is this news to me or is this something you guys don't know about I was just reading that GM was going to discontinue production in 1999 but because of popularity they postponed this date to the summer of 2008 which means by the end of this summer the 3800'* will be discontinued and be replaced by the 3500

It seems stupid to discontinue something that everyone likes so well
I guess they gotta make their money someway they gotta make an engine that is less reliable so it breaks down and needs to be fixed unlike the 3800

it does not put as much power as the 211HP 3.5L and 233HP 3.9 motors.

its a ~40 year old design.....eventhough its probably better than whats replacing it.....

the SC 3.8 has a bit more power than the 3.9....260HP vs 233HP and it has 280LB torque vs 240..and it gets 29MPG vs the 25MPG of the 3.9..go figure.

It is getting harder and harder to meet emissions standards with the 3800

3800'* are heavy vs the all aluminum 60* engines. Much wider packaging constraints as well.

They move big cars just fine, and do it reliably, but much more is possible with new technology.

I know we all love the 3800 here, but they're not as reliable as everyone always talks about on here. They have their failures just like any engine, and some of them are catosrophic which many other GM engines don't have (like hydro lock from leaking gaskets, etc.) The newer engines are good engines that will replace the 3800 just fine. Another new popular engine in the upscale GM vehicles is the 3.6 that'* used in the CTS. It has proven since 2004 not to have any known problems. Yes it'* a new(er) engine, but it has still been around for more than four years and that'* plenty of time to see over 100,000 miles on some vehicles. The new engines are a GOOD step forward to keep GM competitive with the market. They can't do that with an engine that'* been around since nearly the 60'*.

I think the 3.6 is the new 3800, seeing how there are so many GM products with the 3.6 engine...made in St. Catharines Ontario!

Kinda sucks but yeah emissions pushed the 3800 out so no series 4 guys. I read somewhere that the 3800 was one of the cheapest engines to manufacture?

I have asked this question before... Why don't they make an aluminum block DOHC 24 valve version of the 3800? series IV???? you know its possible and would make a **** load of power.

I guess why put the money into updating a old engine when its cheaper to just create a new modern engine.

it would probably suck gas like a **** too.

the 3800 is "old technology", just like my 4.3L
