Line up the dots on the sprockets so they are facing eachother. Then, turn the motor over by hand a couple times to make sure they still line up.

Mark on crank gear should be at 12 o'clock while mark on cam gear is at 6 o'clock.

And the gears are keyed. Be careful, as the camshaft may try to 'walk' on you if you don't have the valvetrain fully assembled. If it walks 'in', you won't have the key to line it up. Pull it out with a strong magnet or the camshaft bolt until you can see about 1/4" of the key if this happens to you.

You shouldn't be that deep in the engine without a service manual.

This will give you an idea of the alignment.


I agree that if you are doing this kind of work, you should have a service manual.

First start off by lining up the dots on the balancer gear and cam gear (the cam gear that is behind the timing chain cam gear). Then put on the crank gear and aligh it so the dot is straight up like Archon'* pic. Then put on the chain and rotate the cam to line up the dot on the cam gear (chain one) and the crank gear. Make sure those dots line up.

Put your cam bolt in and torque to proper spec.

Remember to put the tensioner back on before buttoning up the timing cover.
