has anyone seen a quad 4 that was turbo? some of those in the lower 90'* had stock 180 hp. that with a turbo could prob put out some impressive #*. any body seen one? got any pics if so?

Back on topic, I've owned 2 quad4'*. I think if you're considering a turbo, you better get ahold of GM and look at their 'rocket parts' for the Quad4. You'll need a cast iron cylinder head to replace the OEM aluminum cylinder head if you're thinking of any kind of boost pressure.

GM has been producing and selling high-end performance parts for that engine for years. The Quad4 is the predecessor to the Northstar (Aurora) V8. It still holds many performance records for gasoline powered ICE engines to this day. Many of them with AJ Foyt behind the wheel.

I don't think it was a turbo quad 4 you are thinking of. GM had a 2.0L turbo from 88 to early 90'* and a 1.8L turbo before that. i have a 89 Sunbird GT convertible with the 2.0L turbo, but it'* got a hole in the block, so I can't tell you how fast it is.

I never knew of that 1.8L or 2.0L turbo motor. Hmm.

Someone said those Quad4s were over-rated as far as HP goes, but I dunno. The thing I brought up on another GM board was that the Quad 4 had 180 hp way back then, but like 20 years later, GM needs a supercharger to make 200 or so (Cobalt, Ion). It would seem to me that we'd have the technology today. You could bring up the Honda VTEC (Civic SI, S2000) that make a load of HP but I guess their power bands are pretty narrow.

The 1.8 was an option on the 85-87 Sunbird, intended to compete (and failing to do so) with the Dodge cars and Ford'* turbo Escort. They weren't common at all, and I doubt there are many left running.

That 180hp is a PEAK hp figure, and the quad four is truly a peaky engine. They are pretty gutless down low, but hellacious on the upper end, one of the reasons they went so fast in all those speed runs, and why they are still popular in circle track racing.

GM may need a superchager to make 200hp in the Cobalt, but you're forgetting what torque is. An L27 doesn't have very impressive hp numbers either, but will out-torque many V-8'*.

Let'* not get in the habit of classifying engines based on HP alone. You're overlooking something just as important.

The Quad4 is IMPRESSIVE in stock form, particularly when coupled to a 5-speed. My first was, but my second was Auto. It'* VERY easy to wake them up, and a few have been Turbo'd aftermarket. Again, this is NOT wise with the OEM aluminum Head.
